EARLY YEARS
Dr. Oscar J. Jackson's remarkable journey began on December 17, 1929, in Alabama, where he was born into a family that deeply valued resilience and education. He was raised in a household with six siblings during a time when the harsh realities of segregation and limited opportunities were commonplace for African Americans. Despite these challenges, his early academic prowess allowed him to excel at Fairfield Industrial High School, earning him a four-year Pepsi-Cola Scholarship to attend Howard University.

Education
Many significant accomplishments marked Dr. Jackson's academic career. At Howard University, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, graduating cum laude in 1951. His exceptional work in the field earned him the American Chemical Society Award and a place on the university's wall for outstanding achievement in chemistry. During this time, Dr. Jackson was a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity, which he joined in 1949, reflecting his commitment to excellence and leadership. Following his undergraduate studies, he continued at Howard University's College of Medicine, earning his M.D. in 1955. He then completed his internship and general surgery residency at Homer G. Phillips Hospital in St. Louis, MO, solidifying his future as a physician dedicated to healing.

MILITARY SERVICE

Dr. Jackson's unwavering dedication to service found a profound expression during the Korean War when he answered the call to duty as a surgeon in the U.S. Air Force. Enlisting shortly after completing medical school, Dr. Jackson became a lifeline for soldiers and civilians caught in the crossfire of war. His postings took him to challenging and austere environments, where his surgical expertise and steady demeanor were often the difference between life and death. Known for his extraordinary compassion and tireless work ethic, Dr. Jackson earned the respect and admiration of his peers and superiors alike.  

Rising to the rank of Captain, Dr. Jackson proved to be a skilled surgeon and an exceptional leader. His ability to make decisive choices under pressure saved countless lives and set a standard of excellence for those who served alongside him. The experience honed his surgical

skills and instilled a deeper commitment to using medicine as a tool for healing and justice.  

 

Dr. Jackson's service was marked by both technical brilliance and humanity. Honorably discharged in 1963, he carried the lessons of discipline, resilience, and service into his groundbreaking medical career, embodying the highest ideals of both a physician and a military officer.

PROFESSIONAL CAREER

Dr. Jackson's medical career was groundbreaking and marked by significant firsts. He became the first African American surgeon at San Francisco General Hospital, a role he approached with unwavering dedication to his patients. In addition to his work at the hospital, Dr. Jackson was a clinical instructor at the University of California, San Francisco's Department of Surgery, where he helped shape the next generation of physicians. His career extended into the private sector as well. In 1963, he established a private practice in Vallejo, CA, providing care to underserved communities and serving as a surgeon at Vallejo General and Kaiser Permanente hospitals. For over 40 years, his Vallejo practice became a cornerstone of medical care for the city, addressing significant healthcare disparities.


Later, his dedication to reaching diverse patient populations led him to open a second practice in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. There, he became renowned for offering high-quality medical care to patients regardless of their financial status, embodying his lifelong belief that quality healthcare should be a universal right. These two practices—one in Vallejo and one in San Francisco—illustrate his profound dedication to bridging gaps in healthcare access across racial and economic lines.

Mentorship, Leadership AND Community Engagement

Dr. Jackson's legacy extended far beyond his medical achievements, encompassing a profound dedication to mentorship, community service, and advocacy for marginalized populations. As a mentor to numerous African American physicians, he inspired excellence and leadership in the medical field. He was co-founder and director of the John Hale Medical Plan (HMO) and an active leader in organizations such as the San Francisco chapter of the National Medical Association and the Sinkler Medical Association in Oakland. Dr. Jackson founded the Haight-Ashbury Business and Professional Association and the Western Addition Health Team in San Francisco, addressing the health needs of underserved populations, and established the United Health Alliance, which provided essential food and nutrition programs to low-income residents. His advocacy included empowering youth through his work with the Omega Boys Club and serving on the boards of organizations like the Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation and the Black Leadership Forum. Dr. Jackson was a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Through his efforts, Dr. Jackson exemplified a lifelong commitment to improving the quality of life for marginalized communities and uplifting future generations.

Academic Contributions, AWARDS AND HONORS

Dr. Jackson's contributions to the medical field extended beyond clinical practice to research thought leadership, and community impact. He authored influential papers on prepaid medical and legal plans in community settings and examined the social and financial costs of medical neglect, shaping discussions around healthcare disparities and accessibility. His lifetime of service and excellence earned him numerous honors, including a Certificate of Congressional Recognition, Certificates of Honor from the City and County of San Francisco, and the Vallejo Business Association, recognizing his significant contributions to medicine and community welfare. A member of the "Fifty Year Club" of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Dr. Jackson was celebrated for his enduring impact on education, leadership, and the advancement of the African American community.

Family Life

Despite his extensive professional commitments, Dr. Jackson cherished his role as a devoted family man. He shared a loving partnership with his wife, Norma, and has four children: Oscar Jr., Kim, Kahn, and Brittany. His dedication to his family extended to his community, where he was a role model for aspiring physicians and a tireless advocate for social justice.
